Starring: Lady Gaga, Kathy Bates, and Evan Peters
Season 5 is here, and it gets weird. But not even a really good kind of weird. The kind of weird where Ryan Murphy is just throwing everything he has into a giant pot and hope it tastes good.
This season takes place in a Hotel, a seemingly retro hotel that hasn’t been renovated in sometime. The rooms are grungy, and the staff is creepy and rude. Forget about leaving a bad yelp review, once you check in, you’re not leaving. The story is all over the place to start out with, we have a detective story chasing a serial killer, a vampire story, a long lost child story, a mother and son story and a drug story….ouch that’s too much Murphy, you’re going a little extreme here exposition wise.
Don’t get me wrong, the episode looked great. The sights and sounds are always a horror lovers dream, but without a story that you care about, this season may prove to be another dud like the last two seasons (I hated Coven the most). It’s also too off the wall crazy. A guy getting sodomized by a drill bit? A blood foursome? Murphy is going for shock and awe, but it feels way too forced to be effective.
This series is a mess, but I can’t ignore the fact that it looks pretty and Lady Gaga is actually a good addition. Let’s hope that it gets better from here, but otherwise this season opener is a disappointment for me.
